SOOD'S - Our Roots Print E-mail
The word 'SOOD' is of Sanskrit origin and means a brave person or a victor of enemies. It also means a man who can make progress. Soods have a very ancient and glorious ancestry with noble qualities.

Image-oneIt is believed that Sood’s are linear descendents of agnikul kashatriya’s who lived in the area now known as Rajasthan, Mewar, Gujrat and Sind. Some British scholars say Soods had earlier migrated from Rajasthan. According to them “Uchindia’ Soods (Soods of the hills)” had upper hand in politics of the princely states of Punjab (now Himachal Pradesh). It is believed that in almost all hill states Soods were the Modies (general suppliers) and often lent money to the princes. According to Mukammal Tarikh-i-Sudan (complete history of Soods), they once ruled Sudpura (present day Sirhind) which they lost to Muslim invaders and settled in different parts of the country.

Mr. Ram Ratan Sood, a writer with half a dozen volumes to his credit, has described the Soods as “good natured, tolerant and hospitable people. They are ever ready to reciprocate love and affection but never yield to wrong pressures. Honest hard work is their motto.”Soods are further divided into 52 sub castes which got there name from there king, elders, city or village.

By the Grace of God for the past many years Late Sh. Sat Pal Sood, Sh. Bindoo Sar Sood and Sh. Shanti Swaroop Sood (to name a few of whom we know) all from Hoshiarpur had been working individually, with there own resources and donations/ offerings collected by the locals from the Mehdudias visiting Jatheri Devi Temple in there own capacity to develop the Jatheri Devi Temple,  Darvesh and Sarai near the Temple complex. There work must be appreciated, had it not been for them the temple would have become ruins by now. Taking inspiration from them Sh. Rajender Sood set upon himself the task of bringing all Mehdudias together for a common cause and purpose.
