Our Deity or ‘JATHERI’ Print E-mail

Why we idolhave a different deity or ‘JATHERI’? The story is as old as we are and goes on as below.

It is said that long ago a Mehdudia boy who was a ghee trader visited remote villages in connection with his business accompanied by his pet dog. This gentleman was engaged to a beautiful maiden. On one such occasion when he was walking through the jungle to reach his destination, near the present Bal Khalsa village, he fell prey to a wild animal which killed him.

On seeing the fate of his owner the dog, who it is assumed was helpless against the wild animal, ran back home to get help. By the time the relatives of this man reached the jungle, it was too late. Nothing but some torn clothes could only be found at the site. On hearing the tragedy, the girl was all in tears and decided to offer herself as ‘SATI’.

Though she was not married to the man yet she being a pious soul had already accepted this man as her soul mate and was dedicated to the relation. It is said that the funeral pyre was not set ablaze; it was for her prayer that fire appeared and lit the funeral pyre. All the members of the search party returned but the loyal dog stayed back at the site, in the memory of his master, till its last breath.

The local people living near the temple complex say that a lady’s voice can be heard laughing or crying at night as per the happenings in the Mehdudia parivar, and some have even confessed to have seen spiritual light coming down the hill and immerse at the temple.

And since then a temple has been constructed in her memory and ‘DARVESH’ in the memory of the dog. Since then we all offer prayer at our ‘JATHERI’ and seek her blessings – “Oh our beloved deity shower on us your blessings to keep our relations sacred and strong, to bless us to respect our elders and love our younger and give us good health and prosperity”.
